Okay, so, I’ve read 27 books in 2022. It would have been 28 but I didn’t finish the last 3 pages of that manga until after 12 a.m. ☹️ But even though that’ll be my first read of 2023… I’m not really counting it… but I digress, just had to get that minor frustration out the way. So let me try to put a little list of the best and worst books I’ve read this year in no particular order, no disclaimers 😁
WORST
1. Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena
I DNFd another book by this author before reading this one but I think this one was worse than the one I DNFd 🤔 How that work? 🤨 But anywho, I’m done with this author. Her writing isn’t great and that’s me being generous. The whole book was just… This character did that. That character did this. This character spoke to/saw that character. That character saw/spoke to this character. You know what I mean? Trash. I did like the epilogue but… the epilogue, bitch? That’s all there was to like? 🙃 Nah.
2. Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda
Girl, what is this? What’s the reason?!? I did like the ending, though but… that really has to stop being the case 😅 I think I gave it an extra star because of that. I think I did the same thing with Not a Happy Family too. But, yeah, this book gave ✨NOTHING✨
3. The Perfect Date by R.L. Stine
HAHAHAHAHAHA… a miss. R.L. Stine got those sometimes. I don’t know what the hell this was or what that ending was but I feel like I had better ideas to where it could have went… and they would have been realistic.
4. Saga, Vol. 10 by Brian K. Vaughan
So this is what happens when you take some years off from a really great graphic novel. Bro, I was out here giving Volumes 1-9 4 or 5 stars… mostly 5. This is what we were waiting for? This Volume feels sooo empty and now I don’t care for any of the characters; my fave is dead ✌🏾 . And then there was that one cringy moment about trigger warnings and, bitch, that shit gave me second hand embarrassment. Brian really thought he did something there. I plan on continuing with the series cause we got this deep into it but, man, what a fail.
5. I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
Look, I don’t have this book on this list to be THAT girl. I genuinely feel like I could have gone my whole life without reading this. I listened to the audiobook and maybe that made things worse because Jeannette’s narration was not it. Her voice is dull and lifeless. The story telling seemed kind of all over the place. And I just got to say, for a title this bold it kind of comes off as clickbait-y because I feel like her hate or disdain or whatever for her mother didn’t reach the level in the book for this book to be titled this. I mean, the book isn’t even all about her mother, sometimes Jennette had to tell us about her sexual experiences which… were kind of weird for what this book was trying to tell or do… So, yeah, I didn’t need this in my life.
BEST
1. The Deal by Elle Kennedy
I don’t know where she came from but she here! This was a nice surprise! I did not want to put this down, I stopped everything I was reading to pick this up and read this. I don’t plan on continuing with this series because… fuck them minor characters ✌🏾
2. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
This was a reread and it still lives up to its 5 stars. I’ve been struggling with the second book in the series for yearssss but I got to finish this series this year or die trying.
3. Deserter by Junji Ito
Oh, this was goood. I can’t recall much from this short story collection besides that last story called Deserter but it wasn’t just that story I liked so much. This gave me the old Junji Ito feel and vibes which I haven’t fully felt since Uzumaki. Good timessss.
4. The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis
I don’t know what it is about this book but it’s such an easy read. I really just enjoyed reading this and of course Mr. Ellis has such a unique way of writing and storytelling which I fully noticed in American Psycho but I caught glimpses of it here too. I also didn’t want to finish this once I finished this which I rarely feel when reading.
5. Fence Vol. 5: Rise by C.S. Pacat
Where is Volume 6?!? I need it neeooww! This was so good and that ending!! Don’t leave us hanging!! 😭 I love everything about this series; the drawings are cute, original and funny, I can’t look away. I did this series a disservice by only giving them 4 stars. I’m going to buy this series one day, reread them and make sure they get their 5 stars rating this time because why was I out here only giving them 4 stars?? As the series goes on I realize just how much I love it and that the love ain’t going anywhere ❤️
